How it works

Flattening text typed in caps or received "shouted"

Text received entirely in uppercase reads as shouting and is harder to scan. Excerpts pulled from a PDF form, a legacy application, or an old scanned document often arrive in ALL CAPS. Lowercasing everything at once brings the text back to a readable form you can then recapitalize sentence-by-sentence if needed.

Technical use cases: URLs, IDs, email addresses, tags

Email addresses are case-insensitive but servers prefer them stored lowercase; URLs are case-sensitive and an accidental uppercase can break a link; CMS tags and hashtags are usually normalized to lowercase server-side. Converting a batch of addresses or tags to lowercase before import avoids duplicate-record bugs.

Only the case of alphabetic letters changes. Accents (é, à, ç, ñ) are preserved; punctuation, digits, URLs, and emojis stay intact. Layout (line breaks, tabs) is untouched.
